Nicknamed the "Orchid
Isle" because of it's reputation for producing beautiful orchids,
the Big Island of Hawaii is the largest of the Hawaiian Islands in
terms of land mass with an area of 4,028 square miles and has a
population of just over 200,000 people.
The Big Island of Hawaii is known for it's active volcanoes, Mauna
Loa and Kilauea, which produce spectacular lava flows which
attract tourists from around the world. As a matter of fact, the
island itself was created from five separate volcanoes - the other
three being Kohala, Mauna Kea, and Hualalai. Each and every year
thousands of tourists visit the Big Island to experience the power
and majesty of nature through the island's volcanoes and lava
flows. In addition the beautiful black sand beaches created by the
lava being
pounded by the ocean waves is
another common tourist attraction for the Big Island.
In addition to volcanoes, the Big Island also offers visitors a
chance to view into the heavens on top of Mauna Kea on a number of
famous astronomical observatories, experience Kona Coffee fresh in
the area where it is made, and beautiful scenery of the Kona
Coast, tropical rainforests, snowy mountain peaks, and warm sunny
beaches.
