Constructed in 1913, the Kilauea Lighthouse was a great to many
mariners over the years. Today, it's more of a draw for tourists,
but a lot of work has gone into restoring and protecting this
landmark on the island of Kauai, Hawaii. Over half a million
people visit the spot every year to see the lighthouse and also
take in the natural beauty in the area. It might not seem like it
would attract that many people, but it's a sight to be seen.
The lighthouse was decommissioned in 1976 and the US Fish and
Wildlife Service took over in 1985 as |
part of a 203-acre wildlife refuge. The
Kilauea Lighthouse is listed in the State and National Registers of
Historic Places. Since the lighthouse was built, it's played a big
role in the nearby town of Kilauea. In the past it was because of
plantations, but today it's another local stop for tourists coming to
see the lighthouse and the views.
The Kilauea Lighthouse is part of the Kilauea Wildlife Refuge, which
is also a great location and another reason to come see the lighthouse
that has helped thousands of ships over the years. Sometimes it's good
to get away from the city and see some natural beauty and wonder. Even
if you just take a peek at the lighthouse from a distance, there's a
lot to see and do in the area if you like wildlife and the outdoors.
Even if you don't, there's something about experiencing it even for
just a little bit.
