Located on Kauai, Hawaii, the National
Tropical Botanical Garden was the summer cottage of Queen Emma, wife
of King Kamehameha IV, and the former home of Robert & John Allerton
in the mid 19th century. Since then, it has been restored to that
previous glory and is a testament to the "taming of the beauty" in
Hawaii. The NTBG understands the role plants play in the overall
ecosystem on the planet, but especially how important a diverse
selection of plants are to Hawaii in particular. If
you're curious about what's being done to save |
the beauty of Hawaii or you just enjoy a
well put together garden, the National Tropical Botanical Garden has
locations all over Hawaii, but the Allerton Garden on the south end of
Kauai is something special. If you're on the island, you're going to
want to make a stop here.
From the
manicured lawns to the statues to the flowers, there's a lot to see.
If you're lucky, you just might learn something too.
Tours of the Allerton Estate and the gardens are offered Tuesday
through Saturday, but advanced reservations are required. It's worth
it to set it up, though. If you're going to be in the area, you simply
have to see this attempt at creating the most creative and beautiful
landscaping throughout the entire world. When you see the place,
you'll know why it's in the running for that honor.
