Located in Olawalu Valley on West
Maui, the Olowalu Petroglyphs are an important part of the history
of man. A form of picture writing employed by the ancient people
of Hawaii, the rocks found in the area were perfect for early
Hawaiians to record what they could about the passing of time in
their world. While the area is remote and unmaintained, you should
still use restraint when in the area. Do not climb on the rocks or
disfigure the drawings.
While it's a little hard to reach and has been a little over-run
by vandals and the passage of time, it's |
still a great destination for those who
want to see the Hawaii behind what all the other tourists see. Sure,
it's great to see a volcano or lounge on the beaches, but sometimes
it's fun to take a little adventure into the wilderness to see a
message painted on rocks a long, long time ago. This isn't going to be
a destination for everyone, but even if you don't care about seeing
the stick figures on the rocks, there's a lot to see in the area - a
little different than the Hawaii you may be accustomed to seeing.
Whether you have a passing interest or a strong desire to see the
Olowalu Petroglyphs, if you're on Maui, it's a nice little destination
to find. A little off the beaten path, it's not overrun by other
tourists and can give you an honest glimpse into the Hawaii of days
gone by. When you add that to the natural beauty of the landscape, and
you have somewhere that should be on your to-do list if you're in the
area.
