Maui Hawaii - "The
Valley Isle" |
 |
Known as "The Valley Isle" because of the large
fertile isthmus between the two volcanoes which formed the island,
Maui is the second largest island in terms of land mass and the
third largest in terms of population. Over 2 million
tourists come to visit Maui on an annual basis most of which come
from the mainland United States or Canada.
Maui, like many of the other Hawaii islands, is
known for it's water activities like windsurfing, surfing,
snorkeling, whale watching, body boarding and sports fishing
|
| just to name a few.
Whale watching is a popular past-time on the island
of Maui and is probably one of the biggest reasons many tourist
come to the island of Maui. In fact, the town of Lahaina on
the west coast of Maui was a major whaling center during the
height of the whaling era in the mid 1800's, so there is a long
culture and history dealing with these majestic creatures of the
ocean in Maui. The reason you have a better chance at
spotting a whale on Maui than any other island in Hawaii is
because humpback whales shelter in the 'Au'au Channel between the
islands which make up Maui county during the winter after coming
down from Alaska's waters.
Visitors can also find more than a handful of
attractions on Maui, some of the most popular destinations on Maui
for tourists include Haleakala Crater, driving the scenic Hana
highway, or spending a day at one of the many museums,
restaurants, and shops in the town of Lahaina Maui. Of
course, you can't forget to visit the many tropical beaches around
Maui! |
