Diamond Head Crater: Jewel of Waikiki
If you're on Oahu island in Waikiki, there's no missing Diamond Head
Crater. It rises majestically a short distance from the city, a stark
contrast to the modern buildings. If you're in the area, it's
definitely worth the journey to hike to the top of Diamond Head
Crater. Whether it's the excitement of climbing on an ancient, extinct
volcano or the view you get once you reach the summit, the volcano is
an extremely popular destination for hiking and climbing enthusiasts
from all over.

Measuring 3,520 feet in diameter and with a summit of 760 feet,
Diamond Head Crater is an impressive display of mother nature. The
volcano (which the natives called Brow of the Tuna), got its name from
sailors who thought crystals in the rocks glittering in the sunlight
from a distance were diamonds. Whatever you call it, the volcano has
been extinct for over 150,000 years, which is a relatively short
period of time, geologically speaking.
Even if you don't consider yourself a mountain climber or an outdoor
person, a trip to the top of Diamond Head Crater is well worth the
effort needed. If you're worried about going out alone, Waikiki has a
lot of guides and other people willing to help you plan a great trip
to the top of the volcano. If you're in Waikiki and need to 'get away'
from the city for a day, Diamond Head Crater might not flicker as much
in the sunlight, but it's still one of the natural crown jewels of
Hawaii.
