While you may think that if you've seen one beach you've seen them
all, this isn't true when you're talking about Waikiki Beach. The
beach is looked over by a large statue of a Hawaiian legend - Duke
Kahanamoku. If the name doesn't ring a bell, think about surf boards.
Some say he is the father of modern surfing, which makes a statue of
him appropriate at this beach. If you have an interest in surfing,
this statue is going to be interesting.
The Waikiki Beach is about more than just surfing or playing in the
water, though. From long walks on the breathtakingly spectacular beach
to fine dining or shopping at the world class restaurants, cafes and
shops, this is one of the more popular areas in Waikiki. A blend of
island life and urban life, if you are in Honolulu, you are going to
want to stray down to this area at some point during your stay. This
is a good thing, though.
Whether it's to enjoy the beach and the ocean or to take advantage of
all the high class restaurants and shops, if you're in the area,
you're going to feel drawn to Waikiki Beach. (I'm just trying to warn
you that there's no use in trying to resist the urge!) If you want to
see the beauty of Hawaii close-up, there's almost no better spot in an
urban setting. This area is one of the reasons Hawaii is called
paradise by so many people all over the world.
